Curriculum

SDC offers a variety of classes taught by highly qualified instructors.

Toddlers (Ages 2 – 4)
Students will receive a fun introduction to the basics of dance. A combination class of tap and ballet steps are taught to develop motor skills and muscle coordination. This program provides a head start and solid foundation for future success in all styles of dance.
Dress Code – Any color leotard and tights, dark tan U-shell Revolution tap shoes with buckle strap and pink Revolution all leather split sole ballet slippers (to be ordered through the dance center). Hair tied back. Students will need a dance bag to carry their ballet slippers into class – no toys or dolls in the bags.
Male Students – Sweat pants or sweat shorts, T-shirt or tank shirt, black patent leather tie up tap shoes (see instructor for recommendations) and black Revolution all leather split sole ballet slippers.
Classical Ballet (Ages 5 & Older)
Ballet provides the foundation for all styles of dance and helps develop grace, discipline, confidence and proper body alignment. Class consists of barre work, center floor, including adagio, allegro and progressions. Our ballet program follows the Cecchetti Method. Pointe classes are offered for qualified students. (Recommendation from instructor).
Dress Code – Black leotard; (no attached skirts or decorations on leotard), and pink tights. Hair must be in a secure bun with bobbie pins and a hair net. This is strictly enforced. Students will not be permitted to participate in class without required attire and a secure bun.
Ballet Levels Kinder - I - Require pink Revolution all leather split sole ballet slippers, (to be ordered through the dance center).
Ballet Levels II-V - Require light pink - "So Danca - Bliss" stretch canvas split sole, style #SD16, (to be ordered online).
Male Students – Sweat pants or sweat shorts, white T-shirt or tank shirt and black Revolution all leather split sole ballet slippers. Advanced level students see instructor for shoe requirement.
Hip Hop (Ages 5 & Older)
This class comprises a blend of today's high energy street movements, typically performed to popular hip hop music. Class consists of warm ups, isolations and progressions eventually forming a routine.
Dress Code – Sweat pants, leggings with t-shirt. Ball caps may be worn. NO booty shorts, (shorts must be knee length). Hair must be tied back.
Male Students – Sweat pants or sweat shorts, T-shirt or tank shirt and black sneakers high top sneakers, (see office personnel for details).

Hip Hop Levels I-III - Sneaker - Converse Chuck Taylor "Mid Slip On" Black/White, (sneakers need white elastic laces > "Inmaker No Tie Shoelaces").

Hip Hop Level IV-V - Sneaker, (with foam showing on tongue - white with black accents). 

Jazz (Ages 5 & Older)
Styles from Broadway – LA are taught bringing the students a variety of techniques in jazz. Class consists of warm ups, isolations, balancing and strengthening exercises and progressions, eventually forming a routine. Ballet is required for advanced level jazz classes.
Dress Code - Any color or style dancewear. Hair must be tied back.
Jazz Level I–V - Requires tan Bloch Neo Flex slip-on jazz shoes, style #S0495L (adult) or #S0495G (child), (to be ordered online).
Male Students - Sweat pants or sweat shorts, T-shirt or tank shirt and black Bloch Neo Flex slip-on jazz shoes.
Lyrical/Contemporary (Ages 5 & Older) (must be enrolled in Ballet)
Contemporary styles are taught to show extension and balance, as well as showing an interpretation of the music. Class consists of warm ups, isolations, balancing and strengthening exercises and progressions, eventually forming a routine. Ballet is required for Lyrical levels I, II & III and Contemporary.
Dress Code - Any color or style dancewear. Hair must be tied back.
Lyrical - Require nude Capezio "Turning Pointe 55" Pirouette shoes, style #H063W (adults) or #H063C (child), (to be ordered online).
Contemporary - Dance barefoot.
Male Students - Sweat pants or sweat shorts, T-shirt or tank shirt and bare feet.
Musical Theatre (Ages 5 & up) (must be currently enroll in Ballet and/or Jazz)
Class consists of exercises displaying movement and character portrayal in which dancing play an essential part, along with acting and singing.

Dress Code - Any color or style dancewear. Hair must be tied back.

The required footwear will be determined mid season once dance style is selected. Until selection is made, jazz or hip hop sneakers are acceptable. 

Male Students - Must wear sweat pants or sweat shorts, T-shirt or tank shirt.

Tap (Ages 5 & Older)
Our tap program allows students to learn the fundamentals of tap by working rhythms and coordination exercises. Class consists of warm ups, center floor exercises and progressions, eventually forming a routine.

Tap Levels I-II - Require dark tan U-Shell Revolution tap shoes with buckle strap (to be ordered through the dance center).
Tap III - Require black "Bloch Respect" leather lace up shoe, Style #S0361, (to be ordered online).

Tap Levels IV-V - Require black "Bloch - Jason Samuel Smith" - leather lace up shoe, Style #S0313L, (to be ordered online).

Tap Company - Require black "Bloch - Jason Samuel Smith" - leather lace up shoe, Style #S0313L, (to be ordered online).

SDC Company (Recommendation from Instructors)
SDC Company is an elite group of dancers. These dancers are selected by the director and are required to spend at least four or more hours per week in classes and rehearsals depending on the company level. Members of the SDC Company excel in different subjects; therefore, schedules may differ.
Summer classes and workshops are required for company members and prospective company members. Director will evaluate all members for proper level placement during the summer session. Private auditions and interview is needed, if applying after summer evaluations.
